Undergraduate Family Business Club Hosted Jason Harris of Furnitureland South and The Design Network

Thursday October 29, 2020

The UNC Family Business Club continued their speaker series this semester with Jason Harris, UNC ’94. His family business, Furnitureland South, is the largest furniture store in the world! The business was founded by his father in 1969, and Jason is now co-president. Jason, a UNC Alumni, talked with our group about working for his family business, how it started, and how it has grown. He proudly talked about his late father, who he described as a business superhero. Jason learned lessons from him that he has put into practice as he pursued his own dreams, such as how to be a great negotiator, and his strong work ethic.

Jason also pursued his own entrepreneurial venture – The Design Network (TDN). A streaming channel that features original series and expert interior designers. They have mastered the art of design storytelling. TDN has been a huge success in the entertainment market, available on various streaming platforms.  One secret to his success is to hire people who can do the things that you can’t do. You don’t have to be an expert at everything.

Jason shared his experience finding people who believed in TDN’s mission, and shared specific stories of how he overcame obstacles in starting the network. He encouraged us all to keep pressing on and sharing our ideas. His openness in sharing his experiences kept the meeting lighthearted and fun. Discussing how he didn’t give up on his idea was an inspiring reminder to future entrepreneurs to never give up and pursue their passion. Being entrepreneurial within ones family business remains a topic of interest for many next-generation family members, while honoring the company’s past successes and history. Jason has been successful in honoring his family’s legacy, while creating a successful path for his future.
